Cryotherapy is one of the latest treatments, which is being evaluated for its use in early stages of prostate cancer. This treatment kills cancer cells by freezing them. Freezing is carried out by placing a frozen liquid (liquid nitrogen or argon) through the needle directly into the prostate gland. The procedure is performed under ultrasound imaging guidance.
Currently, cryotherapy is recommended for patients with locally advanced prostate cancer who, for whatever reason, are not candidates for other treatments. Cryotherapy is still being studied to determine which patients could benefit from it. For example, studies are underway to determine if cryotherapy is beneficial as an initial treatment for organ-confined (localized) prostate cancer.
