lthough stem cell therapy has made tremendous advancements over the past years, there are still misconceptions regarding this breakthrough treatment.

Stem cells offer us the possibility to understand and treat or improve a range of illnesses and diseases for which traditional medicine does not work. So far, stem cells have been successfully used in patients suffering from chronic diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Diabetes, various types of cancer and Muscular Dystrophy to name a few.

Embryonic, tissue-specific, mesenchymal or induced pluripotent stem cells, they all offer they benefits which can change the lives of patients to the better. Each day important clinical trials come up with new discoveries related to the amazing results stem cell therapy has to offer.

Although, there is still a lot to discover and learn about stem cells, the studies made so far and the results of stem cell therapy on various medical conditions, has helped scientists eliminate some of the myths that are causing this subject to be controversial.

Dr. Abhijit S. Bopardikar, the director of ReeLabs Stem Cell Therapy Clinic in Mumbai, India, rules out some of these myths. Dr. Abhijit Bopardikar has earned his M.D. in Pathology in 2004, at Topiwala National Medical College & B.Y.L. Nair, Hospital, Mumbai University. His interest in stem cells and the years spent researching this field, has made him one of the best Stem Cell Therapy expert in the country.

"It is my earnest endeavor to pioneer clinical trials for various universally prevalent debilitating diseases using stem cells, in an effort to provide an effective alternative for expensive, painstakingly protracted and routinely ineffective conventional therapies," says Dr. Abhijit S. Bopardikar.

Even if more and more people are beginning to understand and trust the benefits offered by Stem Cell Therapy, there are still many that are skeptical due to these myths.

Stem Cell Myths

1. Embryo and Bone Marrow are the only sources of stem cells

Although the stem cells extracted from an embryo are of the highest quality, this is not the only source available. For many years bone marrow stem cells (mesenchymal stem cells) have been used to treat certain types of cancer. But recent studies have showed that the mesenchymal stem cells are also found in adipose tissue, and the frequency at which it is found here is almost 2000 times higher than it is in a bone marrow. Therefore, stem cells can also be taken from, adipose tissue, muscle tissue and other organs (heart, lungs, etc.).

2. Stem Cell therapy is properly researched and tested

Some people think that stem cell therapy is not safe as it is not properly researched. On the contrary, stem cell therapy is continuously researched and new properties of these cells are discovered. Clinical trials have been going on for decades, which means that medical researchers have already tested the potential of stem cells in treating or improving the symptoms of certain medical conditions related to the bones, lung, heart and brain. There is also the misconception that your body rejects the stem cells. I can assure you that there is no such risk as long as the stem cells are derived from the patient's own tissue.

3. Stem cell therapy is illegal in the United States

I have heard many people saying that it's impossible for stem cell to be legal in India, when it's not even legal in the US. Federal law considers cultured or grown stem cell products as drug, but that does not make it illegal. But the stem cells that are derived from the patient's body are not cultured. Adult stem cell therapy is widely used in the US too for leukemia and other illnesses. Stem cells derived from bone marrow are being used for transplants for years now in the US.

4. Stem Cell banking is useless

Cord blood banking means collecting blood left in your newborn's umbilical cord and placenta and store it for future medical use. Cord blood contains potentially lifesaving stem cells. These stem cells can be later used to treat children with cancerous blood disorders (such as leukemia), genetic blood diseases (such as Fanconi anaemia) and even for bone marrow transplant. Cord blood banking has been in existence for 25 years and according to scientists umbilical cord stem cells can be stored indefinitely. They are stored at or below -190° C where biological activity ceases.

Such misconceptions and myths arise out of lack of knowledge. That is why I advise all the people to research about stem cells and read as much as possible about this subject because it is a milestone in the history of medicine. Talk to specialists in this field and do not rely only on what you read on the internet. Go to a good stem cell facility and talk directly with an experienced doctor who can tell you everything you want to know about stem cells. This will keep you away from all the controversy related to this subject.
