• Minimal Invasive Surgery
Hospital in Hospital System
The Medical Oncology Department offers the diagnosis and treatment of most cancer types in addition to preventive measures and clinical research opportunities. Treatment and observation plans for patients diagnosed with cancer are developed in a multi-disciplinary approach with cooperation of the Departments of surgery, radiology, pathology, nuclear medicine, internal medicine and radiation oncology. During therapies and follow up depending on patients need, cooperation with supportive and palliative care team which includes algology (pain care), nutrition and psychology is also done.
Under supervision of specialist doctors, specific oncology nurses, experienced in meeting the psychological and physical needs of cancer patients, are appointed to administer chemotherapy and take care of oncology patients.
In its most general sense, chemotherapy is the treatment of tumours by chemicals. Together with surgery and radiotherapy, chemotherapy forms one of the most fundamental segments of tumour treatment. Chemotherapy is administered strictly in accordance with the type of tumour and patient's characteristics.
Chemotherapy is Performed for Either or All of the Following:
Which Types of Medical Therapy are Used?
Medications may be administered in different ways. Whilst some of them are chemotherapeutic medications (cytotoxic) designed to eliminate tumour cells, others inhibit tumour development and proliferation (targeted agents, cytostatics). Others include hormones and supportive care agents.
When is Chemotherapy Used?
For some certain types of tumours, chemotherapy is the only available treatment method. Some tumours require the sequential or simultaneous use of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, while others may require chemotherapy before or after surgery. The entire duration and frequency of use depends entirely on the chemotherapy programme selected specifically for the patient's condition.
Bone Marrow Transplantation
Anadolu Medical Center's Bone Marrow Transplantation Center, Bone Marrow Transplantation Clinic offers autologous transplants and allogeneic transplants and promise highest quality medical care for our patients by health care professionals who specialize in site-spesific disease or therapies. Anadolu Medical Center also is capable of performing molecular level cancer diagnosis and observation. Flow Cytometry and PCR allow molecular level cancer diagnosis as well as monitoring of treatment efficacy. By generating the patient's molecular risk profile we can choose the treatment which is most suitable for the individual.
Bone Marrow Transplantation Center features:
Located on two floors, the Bone Marrow (Stem Cell) Transplantation Service has a bed capacity of 22 beds. Spacious rooms, fully equipped with HEPA filters, are designed to provide patients the best possible physical and mental comfort. The risk of infection is further minimised by the presence of HEPA filters in corridors and nurse offices. HEPA filters in the wards give the patient a chance to walk around outside of his or her room. The specially designed patient beds are comfortable, and rooms feature a music system, cable television, and wireless internet connection. The hospital also has a separate entrance for patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation.
Initially, transplant candidate patients are asked to provide complete treatment records, laboratory test results, imaging test reports and pathology reports in English or Turkish. We also take a complete renewed medical history, followed by a thorough physical examination. The ultimate decision for transplant treatment is made together with the patient once all relevant details have been carefully discussed.
Diseases that May Benefit from Bone Marrow Transplantation:
World-Class Radiation Therapy Technology Platforms
Successful clinical outcomes generally require a combination of treatment modalities, including surgery, radiation therapy, anti-cancer drugs and hormonal therapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy and gene therapy.
Today; radiation therapy technology is so far advanced that X-ray beam can be tailored to the shape of a tumor and delivered to the target area with a high degree of precision and intensity.
Radiation Oncology is the medical use of ionizing radiation as part of cancer treatment to control malignant cells. As a discipline, it concentrates on treating cancer and sometimes other illnesses.
It examines the effect of radiation and tumor behaviour and it is involved in research and training.
What is Radiotherapy?
Radiotherapy is the use of ionizing radiation on malignant and some selected benign illnesses. Approximately 60-80 % of all cancer patients are exposed to radiotherapy at least once during the course of the disease. Radiotherapy may be used with curative intent, in adjuvant settings (intensifying the effectiveness of other treatments), with palliative intent (where a cure is not possible and the aim is for local disease control or symptomatic relief) or for prophylactic (protective) purposes.
The Department of Radiation Oncology serves patients with a team of highly experienced and well-trained specialists capable of using and following advanced technology at international standards. The radiation oncology staff includes a radiation oncologist, medical physicist, radiotherapy technician, simulator technician, mould technician, nurse, dosimetrist, psychologist, social services specialist, dietician, radiation protection specialist, and administrative officer. The Department of Radiation Oncology is equipped with the state-of-the-art infrastructure and equipment, offering world standard radiotherapy practices. Moreover, Anadolu Medical Center is in strategic partnership with Johns Hopkins Medicine, which tops the USA honour roll for several consecutive years including cancer care and a reliable partner in providing treatment.
Treatment planning systems employed are designed to perform image-based planning procedures. They use the latest technologies to determine tumor borders by image processing and image transferral. All patient files at Anadolu Medical Center are also kept in digital format simplifying the process of closely monitoring cancer patients.
For a target oriented cancer treatment: CyberKnife®
State-of-the-art cancer treatment: CyberKnife®
At Anadolu Medical Center, we welcome the latest developments in medical technology. One of those is the most advanced form of radiosurgery, and currently one of the safer ways to treat tumors non-invasively: CyberKnife® technology.
Considered as a state-of-the-art cancer treatment designed to destroy tumors with minimum damage to surrounding tissue, CyberKnife® technology is available at Anadolu Medical Center since 2005 making it the fourth medical center in Europe to have acquired it. We have accumulated experience with hundreds of international patients from over 20 countries already.
CyberKnife® is the only radiosurgery system to combine a linear accelerator, a robotic arm and image guidance system. With its unique precision, CyberKnife® can target lesions that are unreachable by more commonly used radiosurgery systems.
With its painless and blood-free treatment application, CyberKnife® is faster than ever. Its treatment is much shorter than usual, by virtue of its increased dosage induction speed and technological advancement which tracks moving tumors in real time. CyberKnife® technology may avoid the need for invasive surgery and has become an interesting treatment option.
What are the Stages of CyberKnife® Treatment?
Our multidisciplinary teams evaluate every patient for Cyberknife® in accordance with medical protocols from various areas of expertise such as Radiation Oncology, Neurosurgery, General Surgery, and Urology. CyberKnife® treatment eligibility is evaluated by a multi-disciplinary working group that decides on a case by case basis.
The following stages of Cyberknife® treatment are usually concluded in a few days.
Preparations are made according to the involved body area. If a patient receives brain treatment, a thermoplastic mask is made to fit the patient's face and renewed CT images are scheduled. If prostate, pancreas, liver, lung or soft tissue tumors are targeted, three to six markers are inserted inside the target. An appropriate vacuum bed is also prepared for the patient in order to feel comfortable.
Following the preparatory stage, the patient returns home.
At that time, a plan is prepared to send the X-rays to the tumor in the most suitable way without harming surrounding tissue. Doctors and medical physicists work hand in hand on the patient's radiological images to develop an optimal treatment plan that suits the patient best.
The patient's treatment starts on the day and at the time specified to the patient following his or her arrival at our CyberKnife® center. Treatment usually takes 30 minutes to two hours. Treatment might be implemented in two to five fractions. In such a case, a 24-hour interval (minimum) is allowed for each phase of the treatment. The patient may return home or to work after each treatment session.
What makes CyberKnife® a better choice?
• The treatment time has been reduced.
Treatment is now much faster than before due to a convertable table and an increased dosage induction speed.
• There is no metallic marker for some lung applications.
The placement of metallic markers for some applications to the lungs is not necessary
avoiding secondary risks.
• CyberKnife® can track moving organs during treatment and adjust its beams accordingly.
CyberKnife® has an IGRT 6D Tracking system including for example the detection
of rotational changes to patient movements during treatment.
• CyberKnife® Radiosurgery has less side effects than conventional radiotherapy.
Treatment will be conducted more effectively both for the patient and the doctor, leading to better results.
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
IMRT delivers an escalated tumor-killing dose of radiation only at the tumor site by precisely applying numerous shaped beams with several intensity modulated fields from multiple beam angles. Using sophisticated computerized dose calculation methods, it allows the beams to conform precisely to the shape of tumor while significantly sparing healthy tissue.
3-Dimensional Conformal Radiation Therapy (3D-CRT)
Conformal radiotherapy is designed to deliver higher doses of radiation to cancer cells while significantly reducing radiation to the surrounding healthy tissues, and allows physicians to visualize the treatment area in three dimensions with greater precision than conventional radiation, targeting a tumor while sparing healthy tissue.
Radiation Oncology Experts and Teams
The Anadolu Medical Center Radiation Oncology Unit employs an interdisciplinary team of highly trained personnel and radiation oncology specialists including two full-time internationally trained radiation therapists, four radiation physicists and six radiation oncology technicians supported by radiation oncology nursing team.
In the Nuclear Medicine Department at Anadolu Medical Center, scan (PET/CT) is carried out in patients with cancer or patients with a cancer doubt, and studies on organs like thyroid, heart, bones, kidneys, brain and liver to evaluate their functional status by nuclear medicine methods.
Nuclear Medicine tests provide important information about diseases by imaging and they cause minimal intervention on the human body. These tests are highly sensitive to reveal abnormalities in the structure or function of an organ and they are used for diagnosing many serious diseases and help to guide the treatment.
With these methods, medical problems can be diagnosed at a very early stage, before they are evident with other diagnosis methods. Keeping diseases under control early, increases the success rate of the treatment.
Nuclear Medicine methods are also used for assessing the lymphatic spread of the disease in surgical treatment of some cancer types such as breast cancer and melanoma and help in planning the surgery.
In Anadolu Medical Center Nuclear Medicine Clinic, radioisotopes can be used in the treatment of thyroid cancer and some rare cancer types, and for this purpose, a specially designed patient room is available in the hospital.
The applications carried out in the Nuclear Medicine Department are safe, efficient and pain-free. Before the test starts, the medicine with radioactivity is administered intravenously or orally. Either immediately thereafter or after a short while, images of the body which are called “scintigraphy” are obtained using special cameras. These images show the progression or distribution of the radioactive medicine within the body or organ, which is valuable information for the diagnosis. Studies are interpreted by the nuclear medicine specialists and the results are out on the next day.

A full-service pediatric heart center
The Anadolu Medical Center provides inpatient and outpatient diagnostic and treatment services for children with congenital or acquired heart disease. Treatment also includes patients who have advanced into adulthood, providing the consistency of comprehensive care important to positive long-term outcomes. Our pediatric cardiology team excels in the management of complex congenital heart defects and acquired heart disease from the fetus to the adult.
With its focus on maternal fetal medicine, the team can identify many neonatal heart defects prior to birth.
The pediatric heart surgeons at the Anadolu Medical Center Heart Center are highly specialized in the surgical management and repair of congenital heart defects. Our surgical team offers expertise in treating the entire spectrum of congenital heart disease, including the repair of the most common heart defects in children, as well as the repair of the most complex heart defects in neonates and newborn babies. Consultation often begins during pregnancy and helps to prepare both the parents and the surgical team for issues that may arise soon after birth. Many open-heart procedures are performed within days of birth to successfully repair these life-threatening heart defects as early as possible. Excellent postoperative care is achieved with a multidisciplinary team of our surgeons, cardiologists and intensivists.
The overall success of early surgical repair of heart defects has led to a growing number of adults who have survived childhood heart disease. The care of these patients continues throughout their lives and Anadolu Medical Center now has a multi-disciplinary program to care for these complex patients and have extensive experience with a variety of surgical procedures for Adults with Congenital Heart Disease including the following procedures:
The Neurological Sciences Department's units of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry work in close coordination, since their practice usually involves overlapping symptoms and disorders which need to be evaluated from all three aspects and treated accordingly. The Neurological Sciences Department has adopted a multi-disciplinary approach with other departments at the hospital as well, since the nervous system and other systems of the body affect each other in many ways, and offering care to the patient as a whole is our basic principle. Advanced electromyography, headache, neuropathic pain treatment, epilepsy, primary and secondary prevention of stroke, diagnosis and treatment of dementia are among these multi-disciplinary approaches.
Among the sub-units of the Neurological Sciences Department are:
Make a new start to life with epilepsy surgery
Epilepsy Surgery Unit
The Anadolu Medical Center Comprehensive Epilepsy Center provides a full spectrum of medical services for patients with epilepsy. For some patients with medically intractable seizures, surgery to remove epileptogenic areas of the brain may be feasible. The Epilepsy Center offers innovative and cost-effective surgical services. Surgical Procedures include extra operative corticography and stimulation mapping (brain mapping), selective microsurgical amygdalohippocampectomy, neocortical resection, subpial transection, modified hemisherectomy and corpus callosotomy. Most surgical procedures involve the use of stereotactic computer-assisted navigational planning and guidance. Innovative surgical programs include the use of vagal nerve stimulation for patients in whom drugs are ineffective but who are not otherwise candidates for other epilepsy surgery.
Epilepsy fits show great variation depending on the part of the brain that generates them. However the most common type of epilepsy throughout the population is by far temporal lobe epilepsy. Temporal lobe epilepsies happen to be the type that is not only the most suitable for surgery but it has the highest chance in successful treatment. The temporal lobe is fundamental in recording new information to the brain. In other words, it has an essential part in the learning process. It is also vital in the formation and development of memory. The temporal lobe could also be defined as the part of the brain that makes first preparations in storing previous experiences the brain has been exposed to.
80 percent epilepsy surgery success rate
Epilepsy surgery demanding serious teamwork can only be realised at a small number of medical centers. An experienced and well-trained team supported by adequate technological infrastructure is essential for such surgeries.
The success rate for epilepsy surgery is considerably high. Epileptic fits are totally eradicated in 80 percent of patients undergoing temporal lobe epilepsy operations. The number and severity of fits is significantly reduced for the remaining 20 percent of patients. The rate of success is less with operations executed on different parts of the brain, however this rate is always higher than 50 %. In summary, patients experience an improvement in their living quality.
An alternative method for patients who cannot be operated due to the epileptic foci being located in risky parts of the brain is "Vagal Nerve Stimulator". This device that is placed on the wall of the chest with a minor operation, similar to a pacemaker stimulates the vagus nerve. The doctor specifically adjusts the magnitude and frequency of the stimulant signal sent to the nerve for the patient. Vagal nerve stimulator method either completely ceases epileptic fits or reduces them significantly to bearable levels. This is an especially suitable method for children.
Women's Health & IVF
The Obstetrics and Gynecology Department is dedicated to the well-being of women at all stages in their lives through routine yearly check-ups, screening tests and other preventive methods. The department treats all health issues affecting women with an internationally experienced staff of subspecialty experts.
Assisted Reproduction Unit (IVF)
Infertile couples treated with the latest technology and advanced methods enjoy very high success rates at Anadolu Medical Center's IVF unit, under the guidance of a specialized group of clinicians. In addition to assisted reproductive techniques such as IUI (intrauterine insemination) IVF (in vitro fertilization) and ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection), and PGD (preimplantation genetic diagnosis); surgical interventions like TESA (testicular sperm aspiration), TESE (testicular sperm extraction) and PESA (percutaneus sperm aspiration) are performed to obtain sperm.
The embryology laboratory has the superior technical infrastructure and experienced staff necessary to provide all possible methods of infertility treatments, including assisted mechanical or laser hatching, embryo freezing and blastocyst culture.
The Gynecologic Oncology Unit treats patients with malignancies of the female genital tract. Optimal pre-operative evaluation and individualized planning of treatment are cornerstones of our management approach. In line with this, we use various radiological imaging studies (i.e. ultrasonography, MRI, CT scan, PET/CT) and/or colposcopic examination according to needs of patients. After preoperative evaluation is completed, each patient's treatment is planned by a multi-disciplinary team of radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, radiologists and pathologists.
The best outcome depends on optimal surgical treatment. Accordingly, these operations are performed by experienced surgeons trained at the most prominent gynecologic oncology centers. The optimal completion of surgical treatment often requires the collaboration of different departments such as anesthesiology, urology, pathology, general surgery or thoracic surgery.
Musculoskeletal system plays a fundamental role in our daily lives and is comprised of bones, muscles, joints, tendons and nerves. Anadolu Medical Center Orthopaedics and Traumatology department provides high quality services to patients in the field of diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal system disorders.

Canadian patient comes to Anadolu Medical Center for CyberKnife® treatment
A resident of Canada, Laurie Dunford had been suffering from cancer since 2001 however; in spite of difficulties, she succeeded in her fight against the illness. Unwilling to wait for the time consuming beaurocratic procedures in her home country, Dunford came across Anadolu Medical Center whilst seeking an alternative solution for her treatment. Dunford was initially diagnosed with breast cancer but had managed to stop the progress of the illness with treatment. Some time later, Dunford developed blotching on her forehead upon which doctors recommended a complicated surgery. Hesitant about such a surgery, Dunford said: "I decided to surf the internet to see if there was any other alternative treatment methods for my condition. I soon came across CyberKnife® and gathered substantial information. I knew I would have to wait a long time for treatment in Canada. Time is always valuable in these circumstances. This is why I got in touch with Anadolu Medical Center." Very impressed with Anadolu Medical Center's hospitality right from the moment she was met at the airport, Dunford added: "I was never left alone until my treatment was complete. I felt tranquillity as I stepped foot inside the hospital building. They lost no time in starting on my treatment."

Iranian patient comes for PET-CT Scan
Living in the Iranian capital Tehran, Shakineh Ghaferi was diagnosed with colon cancer approximately seven months ago. Ghaferi's follow-up examinations after surgery identified liver metastasis and he was started on chemotherapy. Upon noticing a partial response to chemotherapy, Ghaferi's doctor asked him to get a PET-CT scan. Nonetheless, there was no hospital in Iran offering this service.
This is when Ghaferi came across Anadolu Medical Center. Initially looking into hospitals in Dubai, Ghaferi explained why he preferred Anadolu Medical Center: "My nephew is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University's School of Medicine. He still is a physician working in Michigan. We applied to Anadolu Medical Center upon his recommendation, since they were in strategic partnership with Johns Hopkins. Anadolu Medical Center's close cooperation with Johns Hopkins was quite crucial in our decision."
