Read more detailsChoosing the right clinic for double donation in Spain involves evaluating their success rates for your age group, the size and diversity of their donor pool, and their communication style. Prioritize clinics with transparent processes, advanced lab technology, and a dedicated international patient support team to ensure a smooth and supportive journey from start to finish.
Making this significant decision requires careful consideration of several key factors. Look beyond the headline success rates and delve deeper into what makes a clinic the right fit for you. A good starting point is to verify the clinic's accreditation and ensure it complies with Spanish and European reproductive medicine laws.
Here are some specific points to investigate when comparing clinics:
Spanish law mandates strict anonymity for both egg and sperm donors, meaning clinics cannot reveal their identities to recipients. Clinics are legally required to perform extensive medical and genetic screening on all donors. The law also sets age limits for donors and recipients, ensuring all procedures are conducted within a regulated, ethical framework for patient safety.
Spain's assisted reproduction laws are among the most comprehensive in the world, providing a secure environment for fertility treatments. When you choose a clinic in Spain, you are protected by these regulations.
Key legal aspects that clinics must adhere to include:
Spanish clinics use a meticulous matching process based on phenotype and blood type compatibility. After you provide your physical characteristics and photos, the clinic's medical team carefully selects an egg and a sperm donor from their bank whose features closely resemble yours and your partner's (if applicable). This process is legally mandated to ensure the best possible physical match.
The goal of the matching process is to ensure the resulting child shares a physical resemblance with the intended parents. This is a highly regulated and serious responsibility for the clinic.
The process typically involves these steps:
Clinics in Spain report very high success rates for double donation, often among the best in Europe. This is due to using gametes from young, healthy, and rigorously screened donors. Look for clinics that provide transparent, cumulative success rates per cycle, often exceeding 60-70% for pregnancy per embryo transfer, with live birth rates being the most crucial statistic.
When evaluating a clinic's success rates, it's important to understand what the numbers mean. Success is not just about getting a positive pregnancy test; it's about a healthy live birth.
Here’s how to interpret the data provided by clinics:
To verify a clinic's credentials, check if it is officially registered with the Spanish Ministry of Health (Ministerio de Sanidad) and the regional health authority. Reputable clinics are also often members of the Spanish Fertility Society (SEF). Look for quality certifications like ISO 9001 on their website, which indicates adherence to international quality management standards.
Ensuring a clinic is properly accredited is a critical step in your safety and the quality of your care. Don't hesitate to ask the clinic directly for proof of their certifications.
Here are the key credentials to look for:
Top Spanish fertility clinics provide comprehensive support for international patients. This typically includes a dedicated, multilingual personal coordinator, assistance with travel logistics and hotel bookings, and coordination with your local doctor for monitoring. They aim to minimize your travel time and ensure your experience is as seamless and stress-free as possible.
Clinics in Spain are very experienced in treating patients from all over the world and have refined their processes to cater to their unique needs.
Here’s what you can generally expect from a clinic that excels in international patient care:
Most Spanish fertility clinics operate on a self-pay basis and do not directly bill international insurance providers. However, clinics can provide you with detailed invoices and medical reports. You can then submit these documents to your insurance company to seek reimbursement if your policy covers fertility treatments abroad. Always check your policy details beforehand.
Navigating insurance for treatment abroad can be complex, so it's crucial to do your homework before starting treatment.
Here's how the process generally works and what you should do:
A double donation cycle at a Spanish clinic can be completed relatively quickly, often within 2-3 months from the initial consultation. The process involves an initial remote consultation, donor matching, and uterine preparation, which you can do at home. The final stage requires a short trip to Spain (around 5-7 days) for the embryo transfer procedure itself.
The efficiency of the process is a major advantage of choosing a clinic in Spain. Since there are no waiting lists for egg or sperm donors, the timeline is primarily determined by your own medical preparation.
Here is a breakdown of a typical timeline:
If the first cycle is unsuccessful, a good clinic will schedule a follow-up consultation to review the cycle in detail. They will analyze potential reasons for the failure and adjust the protocol for the next attempt. If you have frozen embryos remaining from the first cycle, you can proceed with a simpler, less expensive Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET) cycle for your next try.
Experiencing a failed cycle is emotionally difficult, but it's not uncommon in fertility treatment. A supportive clinic's response is crucial at this time.
Here's what a quality clinic's follow-up process should look like:
Clinics in Spain use advanced technology for embryo culture and storage. Embryos are typically grown to the blastocyst stage (Day 5) in time-lapse incubators for optimal selection. For transfer, a single high-quality embryo is usually recommended. Surplus embryos are vitrified (flash-frozen) and stored in secure cryobanks for future use in Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET) cycles.
The embryology laboratory is the heart of any fertility clinic. Its technology and protocols have a direct impact on your chances of success.
Key aspects of embryo management at top Spanish clinics include:

DO NOT USE THIS CLINIC. Feels like a complete scam. Terrible communication, really made so many mistakes and never rectified anything, complete disparity between number f follicles and eggs collected. After speaking with many other clinics the evidence suggests the terrible result through fault of the clinic. Would have been great to have had this discussion with a doctor after the egg collection but have been refused multiple times so haven't had any feedback or debrief despite begging to speak with someone for months. Absolute shambles, essentially robbed me of 8k. Please do not use this clinic, there are much much better alternatives. Everything from start to finish was appalling service, little to no communication and mistakes. If I could rate less than 0 I absolutely would.
